The Range

Bumper Plates For
Every Application.

Phoenix bumper plates in HD rubber. Three product lines covering training, competition, and change plates.

HD Training Bumpers

5kg – 25kg · Black · IWF Diameter

The daily driver. Full HD rubber construction, IWF-spec 450mm diameter across all weight increments, stainless steel insert. Built for repeated drops and sustained commercial use. Minimal bounce variation across the range. These are the plates that live on the platform every day.

🏆

Competition Bumpers

10kg – 25kg · Colour-Coded · IWF Spec

IWF colour-coded competition specification. 10kg=green, 15kg=yellow, 20kg=blue, 25kg=red. Tighter weight tolerance, precise diameter, and consistent dead-bounce for competition platform use. Also used in high-performance programming for visual loading speed.

📈

Change Plates (Fractional)

0.5kg – 2.5kg · Pairs · IWF Sleeve Fit

0.5kg, 1kg, 1.5kg, and 2.5kg fractional bumpers for microloading. Non-negotiable in a serious Olympic lifting or powerlifting program. Allows progressive overload at the smallest increment. IWF sleeve-compatible so they sit correctly on the bar with full-size bumpers.

Why Bumper Quality Matters

A Cheap Bumper
Fails When You
Need It Most.

The difference between a commercial and consumer bumper plate isn't obvious until you're at max effort and the plate decides not to behave. Inconsistent diameter means the bar tips on uneven surfaces. Cheap rubber cracks at the insert and starts shedding. Non-IWF diameter means mixed sets look wrong and load differently.

Phoenix HD bumpers are built for the volume of a commercial facility — hundreds of drops per day, for years. The rubber doesn't crack. The insert doesn't corrode. The weight doesn't drift from tolerance.

  • Non-IWF diameter means mixed plate sets don't stack evenly — the bar tips on the platform
  • Recycled rubber compounds harden over time and develop inconsistent bounce
  • Poor insert bonding causes the steel collar to separate from the rubber under sustained drops
  • Weight drift beyond tolerance undermines programming precision on percentage-based loading

Frequently Asked Questions

Bumper Plate Questions
Answered.

HD (high-density) rubber uses a denser, higher-quality virgin rubber compound compared to standard or recycled rubber bumpers. HD rubber maintains consistent performance over thousands of drops — it doesn't harden, crack at the insert, or develop inconsistent bounce over time. Standard rubber bumpers typically show visible rubber deterioration and bounce inconsistency within 12–18 months of commercial use. In a facility doing multiple sessions per day, the quality difference is decisive for longevity.
IWF (International Weightlifting Federation) diameter specifies 450mm as the standard across all bumper plate weights. This matters because: (1) the bar rests at the correct height from the platform, which is critical for the starting position in deadlift, clean, and snatch; (2) mixed sets from different manufacturers stack evenly if they share the same IWF spec; (3) competition-spec movements are practiced at competition-spec geometry. Non-IWF plates at different diameters create an uneven loading surface that tips the bar and changes the pull geometry.
Yes. Bumper plates are used in both Olympic weightlifting and powerlifting, as well as general S&C programming. The floor-protection benefit — being able to drop the bar safely — is valuable in any program involving heavy pulls or overhead work. Many commercial facilities use bumper plates exclusively, or combine HD bumpers with iron plates for heavier loading work (iron inside the bumpers on the sleeve).
Bumper plates require a rubber platform or minimum 20mm commercial rubber flooring to absorb impact correctly. Dropping bumpers on concrete without rubber protection damages both the plates (cracking at the insert) and the floor. Phoenix also supplies commercial rubber gym flooring — talk to Andy if you need a full platform setup including flooring and bar storage.
A general rule for a commercial facility is one full set (5–25kg ×2 pairs) per dedicated platform or weightlifting station, plus two to three additional sets for loading capacity. A 4-platform facility typically orders 6–8 full sets to allow for peak usage without waiting. Andy will size the recommendation to your facility capacity and typical session structure.
Yes. Phoenix supplies vertical and horizontal plate storage trees to complement bumper plate orders. These are included in full facility fit-out quotes. If you're ordering bumper plates for a new facility, note your storage requirements in the form and Andy will include it in the quote.
