Commercial Gym Fit Outs Australia | Phoenix Strength

Build It Right
The First Time.

Design. Supply. Finance. Install.

Opening a gym is one of the most exciting projects you'll ever undertake. It's also one of the easiest ways to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars if you get it wrong. Phoenix was built to help you avoid that.

The truth the industry won't tell you

Why Most Gym Fit-Outs Fail

The fitness industry has a dirty little secret.

Most gyms don't fail because they bought the wrong chest press.

  • They overspend before opening day
  • They buy equipment before planning the facility
  • They underestimate cash flow requirements
  • They ignore member flow and space efficiency
  • They underestimate marketing costs
  • They buy too much equipment they don't actually need
  • They buy cheap equipment that costs more to maintain later
  • They have no growth plan or expansion strategy
  • Too much cardio, not enough strength
  • Not enough storage
  • Ignoring recovery services entirely
  • Not understanding financing options available to them
  • Choosing suppliers who disappear after installation

The equipment matters.

But the facility matters more.

After 15 years in the industry, I've seen incredible facilities fail and average facilities succeed.

The difference is rarely the equipment.

The difference is usually the business behind it.

Phoenix helps you design both.

Meet the founder

I've Made The Expensive Mistakes
So You Don't Have To.

Hi, I'm Andy Taylor.

For more than 15 years I've worked in the fitness industry designing equipment, supplying gyms, building facilities, importing products, managing manufacturing, and helping gym owners bring their vision to life.

I founded Aussie Strength and helped build one of Australia's largest strength and conditioning equipment businesses - from a $7,000 starting point, working security jobs on the side to fund the first inventory run.

Before that, I served in the Australian Army infantry. That experience gave me a practical understanding of training environments, performance facilities, and what equipment actually needs to withstand.

Over 15 years we supplied:

  • Commercial gyms
  • Independent facilities
  • Strength gyms
  • Functional fitness facilities
  • Schools and universities
  • Sporting clubs
  • Defence facilities
  • PT studios
  • Home gyms
  • Recovery centres

Most importantly, I learned what gym owners actually need. Not what a catalogue says they need.

Phoenix was built around a simple idea: Help gym owners build better facilities from day one. Not just sell them equipment.

15 Mistakes I've Seen Gym Owners Make

Every one of these costs real money. Most are avoidable.

01
Buying equipment before planning the layoutYou end up with machines that don't fit, zones that don't flow, and money you can't get back.
02
Underestimating storage requirementsA gym with no storage looks like a warehouse within 3 months.
03
Not budgeting for flooringFlooring is usually 10-20% of total fit-out cost. Most people forget to budget for it.
04
Choosing equipment on appearance, not usageWhat looks good in a showroom and what survives 10 hours of commercial use daily are often different things.
05
Not allowing for future expansionBuy equipment that locks you in and you'll pay again to replace it when you grow.
06
Ignoring member flowPoor layout creates congestion, frustration, and cancellations. Space planning matters.
07
Overcapitalising too earlyOpening with $600k of equipment when $200k would have gotten you to profitability faster.
08
Trying to buy everything at onceStage your purchases. Open with what you need. Add what members ask for.
09
No marketing plan before openingAmazing equipment, zero members. It happens more than you'd think.
10
No retention planGetting members is hard. Losing them because the gym experience is poor is harder to recover from.
11
Too much cardio equipmentCardio equipment is expensive, takes up space, and has high maintenance costs. Strength is more profitable per sqm.
12
Too little storagePlates, dumbbells, bands, accessories. Every gym needs more storage than the owner initially plans for.
13
Ignoring recovery servicesRecovery is where the next decade of gym revenue growth is coming from. Getting in early matters.
14
Not understanding financing optionsMany gym owners think they can't afford premium equipment. Often they can - they just don't know how.
15
Choosing suppliers who disappear after installationThe relationship matters long after the equipment is delivered. Choose people who answer the phone.

"The most valuable lessons usually came from the mistakes. I've made enough of them to know where the traps are."

The Phoenix process

We Don't Start With Machines.
We Start With Questions.

Who is your customer? What is your business model? What are your growth plans? Every answer changes the fit-out.

Step 01

Discovery

Before we discuss a single piece of equipment:

  • Facility size and location
  • Target demographic
  • Budget and timeline
  • Membership model
  • Training style
  • Growth plans
Step 02

Layout & Design

  • Equipment layouts
  • Traffic flow plans
  • Strength zones
  • Functional training zones
  • Recovery zones
  • Storage zones

Goal: maximise usability, member experience and revenue per square metre.

Step 03

Flooring & Turf

Most people get this backwards. The floor comes first. Everything else sits on top.

  • Commercial rubber flooring
  • Lifting platforms
  • Functional training zones
  • Astro turf sled lanes
  • Recovery spaces
Step 04

Rigs & Strength Systems

The backbone of the facility.

  • Phoenix modular rigs
  • Power racks and half racks
  • Storage systems
  • Functional training stations
  • Chin bar systems
Step 05

Equipment Selection

Every piece selected for a purpose. Not because it looks good in a brochure.

  • Strength equipment
  • Functional training
  • Recovery
  • Accessories
  • Branding and custom options
Step 06

Installation & Support

  • Delivery Australia-wide
  • Metro installation available
  • Setup and configuration
  • After-sales support
  • Ongoing growth partnership

SOER Australian Army
Defence. Veterans. NDIS.

Built By Someone Who Served

Our founder served in the Australian Army infantry. That experience provides a practical understanding of military training environments, functional performance facilities, and what equipment needs to actually survive.

We've built gyms for the Special Operations Engineer Regiment (SOER). We understand procurement requirements, compliance standards, and the difference between commercial-grade and military-grade durability demands.

We can assist with:

  • Defence gym upgrades
  • Veteran-focused facilities
  • DVA-related projects
  • Functional training spaces
  • Tactical performance centres
  • Community wellness facilities
  • NDIS-focused facilities
  • Veteran recovery programs
  • Rehabilitation and mobility areas
  • Sauna and cold plunge zones

The fitness industry is evolving beyond traditional gym models. Recovery, rehabilitation, wellness, and community accessibility are becoming increasingly important - and Phoenix is building for where that's heading.

Two major advantages

Finance & Speed.

Two of the biggest reasons gym fit-outs stall. Phoenix has built solutions for both.

Phoenix Finance

Don't let cash flow limit your vision.

Many gym owners know exactly what equipment they want. The challenge is timing. Phoenix can assist qualifying commercial clients with finance options that help preserve working capital while opening with the equipment required for long-term success.

Finance may be available for:

  • New gym openings
  • Facility upgrades
  • Expansion projects
  • Additional locations
  • Major fit-out projects
Discuss finance options

Phoenix Express

The traditional equipment industry is broken.

Most equipment travels through:

Factory
Exporter (adds cost, adds time)
Importer (adds cost, adds time)
Distributor (adds cost, adds time)
Retailer (adds cost, adds time)
You - 12-36 weeks later, paying for 5 layers

Phoenix Express focuses on direct manufacturing, reduced overhead, faster lead times, and better pricing. The goal is simple: more equipment, better quality, better pricing, faster delivery.
