The Straight Answer

Can NDIS funding buy gym and exercise equipment?

Yes, in the right circumstances. The NDIS can fund exercise and rehab equipment when it is reasonable and necessary for your disability, linked to the goals in your plan, and recommended in writing by an allied health professional such as an occupational therapist, physiotherapist or exercise physiologist. Standard fitness gear bought for general health, without that clinical link, generally is not funded. The difference between approved and rejected usually comes down to the paperwork.

What you actually need for funding approval

1. A written recommendation from your OT, physio or exercise physiologist explaining how the equipment supports your plan goals. 2. An itemised quote from a supplier, with an ABN. 3. Approval through your plan manager (plan-managed) or your own records (self-managed). Phoenix Strength handles step 2 in one business day and works directly with your therapist and plan manager on the rest. We supply the equipment and the compliant paperwork. We never decide funding, and we will never pretend we do.

Who We Help

One supplier, four ways in

Participants & Families

Build strength at home, on your plan

Training at home removes the hardest part of rehab: getting to a gym that may not be accessible, staffed or comfortable for you. We help you turn your therapist's recommendation into a home setup that actually gets used, from a single pair of dumbbells to a full accessible home gym.

OTs, Physios & EPs

Specify equipment, get a compliant quote same day

Send us your recommendation and we return an itemised quote your client can attach to their request, usually within one business day. Commercial-grade gear with fine load increments, so your prescribed progressions are actually achievable at home.

Plan Managers

Clean invoices, zero chasing

Every invoice carries our ABN, the participant's name and NDIS number, itemised lines, quantities and unit prices. One point of contact who answers the phone. We make your compliance job boring, exactly how it should be.

SIL, SDA & Therapy Clinics

Full fitouts for accessible spaces

We have fitted out over 1,000 Australian gyms since 2016, including Defence facilities. Rigs, racks, machines, flooring and accessible layouts for supported independent living homes, disability gyms and allied health clinics, designed around your participants.

Read This Before You Buy Anywhere

There is no such thing as "NDIS approved" equipment

You will see other retailers calling themselves "NDIS approved suppliers" selling "NDIS approved equipment". Neither thing exists. The NDIS does not approve equipment brands or retail stores. Funding is decided item by item, participant by participant, against the reasonable and necessary test and the goals in your plan. Any store can take your NDIS money; what matters is whether the purchase holds up when your plan is reviewed.

So here is our position instead: we supply self-managed and plan-managed participants, we quote fast, our paperwork is right the first time, and we work with your therapist rather than around them. If an item does not fit your plan, we will tell you before you spend a dollar on it. That honesty costs us a few sales and wins us the rest.

How It Works

Three steps from recommendation to delivery

1

Tell us what's been recommended

Fill in the form below or call. If your OT, physio or EP has recommended equipment, send that through. Not there yet? We will tell you what therapists commonly specify for your situation, so you can have an informed conversation with yours.

2

Get your NDIS-ready quote in 1 business day

An itemised quote with ABN, unit prices and delivery to your door, formatted so your plan manager can approve it without a single follow-up question. Valid for 30 days while your request is considered.

3

Approved. We deliver, you train.

Plan-managed: we invoice your plan manager directly and you pay nothing out of pocket. Self-managed: pay us, keep the compliant invoice, claim through your portal. Delivery Australia-wide.

Questions, Answered Honestly

NDIS equipment funding FAQ

Can I use my NDIS funding to buy gym equipment?
Yes, when the equipment is reasonable and necessary for your disability and linked to goals in your NDIS plan. You will generally need a written recommendation from an allied health professional (OT, physiotherapist or exercise physiologist) and an itemised quote from a supplier. Standard fitness equipment bought for general health, without that clinical link, is generally not funded. We provide the compliant quote and work with your therapist on the rest.
Is Phoenix Strength an NDIS registered provider?
We are an unregistered provider, which means we supply self-managed and plan-managed participants, who together make up around nine in ten NDIS participants. Registration is only required to supply agency-managed (NDIA-managed) participants. If you are agency-managed, talk to us anyway and we will point you in the right direction.
Other stores say they are "NDIS approved". Why don't you?
Because it is not a real thing. The NDIS does not approve retailers or equipment brands. Funding decisions are made per participant against the reasonable and necessary test. Stores using "NDIS approved" are describing themselves generously. We would rather earn your trust by being accurate.
What is the difference between plan-managed, self-managed and agency-managed?
Plan-managed: a plan manager pays providers on your behalf; you can use any supplier, including us, and pay nothing directly. Self-managed: you pay and claim reimbursement through the NDIS portal; you can also use any supplier. Agency-managed: the NDIA pays providers directly and you can only use registered providers. Check your plan or ask your support coordinator if you are not sure; the form below has a "not sure" option and we will help you work it out.
What paperwork do I need before I buy?
Three things: a written recommendation from your treating allied health professional linking the equipment to your plan goals, an itemised quote (that is us, within one business day), and approval from your plan manager if you are plan-managed. Keep everything. If your plan is reviewed, that file is what protects your funding.
Will you guarantee my funding gets approved?
No, and be careful with anyone who implies they can. Funding decisions belong to the NDIA and your plan, not to equipment suppliers. What we can do is make sure the quote and invoice are never the reason a request stalls, and tell you honestly before you start if an item is unlikely to fit the criteria.
Do you deliver Australia-wide? Can I see the gear first?
Yes, we deliver everywhere in Australia and quote delivery as its own line item so there are no surprises. If you are on the Sunshine Coast, visit the showroom at Kunda Park and try the equipment before anything goes on a quote.
Can my OT, physio or support coordinator order for me?
Yes, and it usually makes things faster. They send us the recommended items with your name and NDIS number, we return the itemised quote to them and copy you in. Therapists and plan managers can call Andy directly on 0422 046 895.
